Halloween

My mother isn’t really a fan of Halloween. That being said, I wasn’t brought up to celebrate it. As a child, I believe I only went trick-or-treating once or twice maybe. I think I went out as He-Man when I was 4 or 5. I had a sword and… yea that’s all I remember about it. She took me out  so I wasn’t completely deprived of this childhood tradition I suppose. I can’t say that it bothers me, however. I don’t think I missed out on much. When I have children of my own, I will probably raise them the same way.

Even as a pre-teen I didn’t really celebrate Halloween in any way. I remember one year in an effort to deter me from wanting to go out, my mother had a proposal. She offered me $20 to buy candy for myself instead of going out. What? $20? Please, I took it and ran. Who buys $20 worth of candy for one person? I hopped on my bike and rode with the wind past at least 3 convenient stores to reach the one that sold penny candies. Yes, for $1 I went home with enough candy to spoil my appetite for weeks to come and I was $19 richer than I was when I woke up that morning.

I don’t care for it, but I don’t find it harmful either. I just see it as a day for children to dress up, go trick-or-treating and get free candy. A day for adults  to dress up, go partying and get free liquor. As long as you aren’t dressing up as the devil nor are you attending any cult meetings, it’s no biggie. Just something to do one night a year.

Before I go, I want to share a quick conversation between a co-worker and myself.
Vic: What are you going to be for Halloween?
Female Co-worker: A tampon.

Thank you for ruining Halloween, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas and any other remaining 2010 holiday. Smh, literally.
